Before AI: How We Built a Baltcom Ad Campaign From Clay (2017 Case Study)

In 2017, Baltcom needed to tell apartment-building residents something simple but important: next-generation fiber-optic internet was already installed in their building, waiting to be connected — free of charge. Instead of a generic banner or a stock photo, the idea was: what if there were a real gift waiting at your door?

That became the campaign's key visual — "A gift awaits you!" — a gift box tied with a pink ribbon, left outside a plain apartment door, with a pink internet cable trailing out from underneath it. A simple, warm idea that explains the offer instantly, without needing many words.

How the Visual Was Made — Built, Not Rendered

In 2017 there were no AI tools that could generate an idea like this in a few minutes. So the visual was built for real, at miniature scale, by hand. The wall texture came from textured styrofoam sheeting made to look like a stuccoed surface, mounted onto a plain shipping box for structure. The door, its handle, and the gift box with its ribbon bow were all sculpted from plasticine, piece by piece, entirely by hand. Even the internet cable trailing from the gift is a strip of clay, shaped and curved into place. Once built, the set was lit and photographed exactly like any studio product shoot — the headline text and Baltcom's logo were only added afterward.

Why It Still Matters Today

Today, a visual like this could be generated with AI in minutes — and sometimes that's exactly the right tool for the job. But this project is a good reminder that behind every good AI-generated image are the same creative instincts: an understanding of composition, light, scale, and how a simple idea becomes an image that explains itself without words. This time, that meant hours of work with clay and glue instead of writing a prompt — but the creative process behind it was the same.

It's also a reminder that sitting at a computer isn't the only way to create — sometimes the best solution gets built by hand, in the real world, and only afterward brought into the digital one.
